“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Reading Matthew 11 brought to mind the weariness I felt during an exhausting climb to the top of Yosemite Falls. The climb at the upper section is particularly steep, with many sharp turns and twists. Climbers are often left struggling to take in oxygen at a high altitude. Reaching the summit brings a sense of reward, perspective, and even transcendence. Then you have to muster the strength to hike back down!
The Bible presents toil as a natural part of life and a test of faith. It calls believers to work diligently, even through hardship. Job’s story illustrates this—despite suffering and questioning God, he remained faithful, showing that true perseverance endures even without clear answers.
In our workplaces, we can often relate to Job when it seems as though our work is laced with steep inclines and dangerous turns. If we seek help from our coworkers, the burden becomes lighter. And if we remember that we’re not walking alone as the Holy Spirit is with us every step of the way, the toil in our jobs produces fruit like peeling an artichoke—layer by layer, as the Holy Spirit gently removes defenses to reveal our true hearts.
Toil is part of life, but Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to him. In his rest, we find strength for the climb and healing for the soul.
Pray
Lord, when I am feeling weary, burdened, tired, or worn, help me seek the rest and restoration that you promise in Psalm 23:1–3.

The Bible says that in all our work we serve the Lord, not human masters (Colossians 3:23–24). Share about a time when your work felt futile. How did your faith sustain or guide you through it?
